“Las Gatas” (Le’ Miso’ob, in Maya language) Natural Preserve Cenote Tour

Located only 10 km from Chaktunche Rancho Ecolodge, the Las Gatas cenote (sinkhole) is a Natural Preserve, a unique site you must visit if you wish for an incredible adventure experience of nature discovery, going into the heart of the virgin jungle in the Ruta de los Cenotes.

The tour begins with a vehicle ride to the “Las Gatas” Natural Preserve. Our guides will take you by car 3 km into the heart of the Quintana Roo Mayan jungle through a dirt road. The car stops at the entrance to the location, where you will take an interpretative trail walking inside the Las Gatas Preserve. Here you will be able to notice several types of local plants and birds. After a 15 minute walk, you reach the Cenote Las Gatas, where you will have half an hour for swimming in its clear waters.

70 to 50 years ago, this area (Le’ Miso’ob in Maya, Las Gatas in Spanish, meaning “the female cats”) used to be an important “chiclero” camp, a place where local workers extracted from Chicozapote trees the priced resin called “chicle”, which was then sold to make natural chewing-gum. These workers named the place Las Gatas, and the name has stuck to this day.

After visiting the cenote, which is a practically virgin sinkhole, only visited by local animals, we will dry and have a small lunch to replenish our energy for the walk back to the vehicle that will take us back to Chaktunche Rancho Ecolodge.
